Overcoming your Impostor Syndrome — Journaling Tips

--

“I’ve always felt I was an impostor, a fraud…. Till 37 years old”.

Here is how I have deal with it, with a pen and notebook”

Who am I to follow my heart, leave my family and travel the world ? Who am I to create my own business ? Who am I to teach my passion for writing and meditation ?

Do you know this little voice that always tells you to not dream too big, to not be too different from the norm, to not think too much “out of the box” ?

This little voice, it’s your inner critic. And you know what ? I’ve found 2 interesting facts about that in my research in neuroscience….

The first one is that among our 60 000 thoughts on average per day, 70% of them are self criticism…. Yes, that means that 70% of your time, you’re judging yourself, thinking that you are too much or not enough. Disconcerting, right ?

The second fact is that 70% of the American population experiences impostor syndrome at some point in their lives, whether they are women, men, students, managers or executives.

What is impostor syndrome ?

It’s this feeling of self-doubt and personal incompetence that may persist sometimes, despite your education, experience, and accomplishments.

It’s the belief that you haven’t earned your successes on your own merits but rather by good luck. And you fear others will eventually realize you’re not legitimate.

Can you relate ? I can, and it’s killing me !

I used to hide myself behind my successful clients, and my computer….

I used to make a lot of excuses, to give up on my dearest projects, to not show up, to fall into the trap of perfectionism and fear of judgment….

How did I get out of this trap ?

Through writing, and creativity.

Journaling and Art Journaling liberates me, and increases my self confidence, every morning, a little bit more each day.

Want to give it a try ?

Ok, let’s do that now :

  1. First, take a minute to tune in, to feel your heartbeat and to open your heart to yourself, to recentre on what is important for you right now, instead of what society expects you to do
  2. Open your notebook and set the intention to overcome your impostor syndrome and to gain more confidence in a specific situation you may have in mind
  3. Start writing what your inner critic is saying about you : be compassionate with yourself and feel safe to write this self judging little voice (remember that nobody will read your notebook)
  4. Feel the relief and now, express yourself : what would you want to do if you didn’t feel like a fraud ? Freely express your intuition and creativity on your paper, and when you’re ready, invite something new in your life, make some space for it, and believe it’s possible for you
  5. Write down your next (juicy) step to get there and commit to it. If it makes you feel anxious, break it down into small steps. Do whatever is good for you, but don’t give up !

What difference does the exercise make in my life you may ask ?

The biggest difference it’s that I’m realizing that my heart felt projects and dreams are more important and powerful than I thought !

The more I free myself from my impostor syndrome, the more I realize that I have a non explored power, and that I don’t need to compare myself to achieve what is important for me.

I deeply know now that creativity helps me relax and overcome my impostor feelings, and it’s the reason I’m sharing my tips with you today ;)
